MANSFIELD -- The past will soon be present in lighting up the Richland County Courthouse.
County commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday to bring back the globe lights that hang in the front of the building, providing a similar look to the days when the building opened in 1968.
The board voted to spend $7,440.03 of capital funds to purchase nine of the 24-inch globe lights at $782.67 each.
County maintenance workers will install eight of the lights and one will be kept as a spare.
Commissioners discussed the project Aug. 2 with maintenance supervisor Josh Hicks, an effort that to improve outside lighting and also help restore the look of a building constructed six decades ago.
Hicks said the Baselite Corp., the company supplying the custom-order lights with LED bulbs and an architectural bronze finish, could not say when the globes would arrive. He said the fixtures would be the same size as the originals.
"This is a way to match the history without picking up additional cost," Commissioner Tony Vero said.
Commissioner Darrell Banks said, "It sounds like it would be the closest to what we had (when the building opened)."
In other action Tuesday, commissioners created a county maintenance worker position to work at Dayspring, the county home, in a general fund position, using Dayspring money.
Commissioners then hired Jonathan Rand to fill the position starting Sept. 1 at 18.25 per hour. If Rand obtains, a commercial driver's license, the base pay would be bumped to $19.75 per hour per union contract.
