Deerfield Beach – This city has an on-and-off battle trying to keep its street lights aglow. In particular, Southeast 10 Street has been dark more often than not. Stolen wire was the reason for one of the outages there.

“We have had numerous work orders in this stretch of road over the past couple of years for various reasons – bad relays, among other issues, but the most recent work order identified stolen wire. This has since been installed and now the contractor is working on individual light outages in that stretch,” City Engineer Priscilla Cygielnik said last week.

Resident Chad Cheleden has been complaining to city officials about the Southeast 10 Street street lights from Dixie Highway to Federal Highway for about a year.

“Lights were also out the other night on Hillsboro Boulevard from the Home Depot/Wawa intersection by I-95, going east just about the entire way to Dixie Highway. I think three lights were working,” he said last month. “The south side is equipped with light poles and they are surely not working.”

Last week, Cygielnik said the city’s contractor has restored power to the services affected by wire theft. “We are now dealing with individual light outages that require fixture replacement. This will be a bit more gradual, but we are working on it,” she said.

The city has three contractors working on street light maintenance: CW Fischer, Gerhold Electric, and Miller Electric. CW Fischer is working on Southwest 10 Street and Hillsboro Boulevard.

Asked who is responsible for streetlights – FDOT or the city – Cygielnik said the city is required to maintain the lights on both Southeast 10 Street and Hillsboro Boulevard

As of Aug. 29, Cygielnik reported two work orders were issued the previous week, and repairs were underway.

Copies of the work orders were obtained by The New Pelican.

Work order #262 was issued Aug. 25, for three lights on Hillsboro Boulevard from Southwest 12 Avenue to Dixie Highway.

Work order #263 was issued Aug. 26, for Southeast 10 Street from Dixie to Federal Highway.

“Lights are out, could be the relay box,” the work order states.
