A much-loved local tourist attraction is planning an underground light show in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Stump Cross Caverns near Pateley Bridge has teamed up with award-winning lighting artist Mark Sutton Vane to create a “magical and dramatic” lighting experience for visitors.

Mark Sutton Vane is world famous for his striking illuminations, lighting up the Crown Jewels, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Madame Tussauds and the Titanic over the years.

Stump Cross Owner Lisa Bowerman, aka ‘The Cavewoman,’ said:

“The caves are a mesmerising walkway of natural beauty which exists underneath the North Yorkshire countryside.

“We wanted to bring the cave to life for visitors through dramatic lighting, so we decided to do a ‘taster’ lighting experience on a specific area of the caves, to show what was possible.”

“We thought the Jubilee was a perfect time to take visitors on a magical journey through time.

“The caves really are breath-taking, and we are delighted to have Mark Sutton Vane and his team working with us.”

Mark and his son Ed both hope visitors will enjoy the new lighting which is currently being installed in preparation for the Jubilee.

“The new lighting scheme will show off the wonders of the caverns using theatrical lighting techniques.

“The whole team are excited to be working in such a unique environment.”

“We approached local manufacturers UFO and Evica to supply part of the lighting equipment, who are very keen to be involved in such a unique project. We are very grateful for their help and support.

“One of the challenges in the caves is growth on the rocks when there is light, these can be very damaging to their eco-system, so it is essential we get the lighting just right to preserve these precious caves for the future.”

Stump Cross Caverns has been on a mission to raise additional funds to light up the caves well into the future.

Their Crowdfunding page to win a £130,000 Pateley Bridge apartment has raised over £60,000 so far, which will go to fund projects such as lighting up the caves for future generations to enjoy.
